European Black Nightshade (Solanum nigrum) Linnaeus, 1753

 

Other names: Black nightshade, blackberry nightshade

 

Solanum nigrum is native to the temperate regions of Eurasia; introduced in the Americas, Australasia, and South Africa. It grows at forest and wetland edges, in woodlands and disturbed habitats. Annual or perennial herb, 30-120 cm in height; leaves ovate to cordate, pubescent or smooth with dentate or sinuate margins. The flowers have five greenish to whitish petals, recurved and fused together at the base; five stamens with bright yellow anthers. The fruit is black or purple-black berry, 6-8 mm in diameter.
